The main direction of development of drip irrigation or micro-irrigation in China
China's per capita water resources are 1/4 of the world's average, and water and land resources do not match. In northern China, 61% of cultivated land is used, but only 19% of water resources are used. The special natural conditions determine the important role of irrigation in agriculture. By the end of 2013, the country had irrigated an area of 1.042 billion mu, of which 952 million mu had been effectively irrigated; by the end of 2013, the total area of water-saving irrigation projects in China had reached 407 million mu, including 111 million mu for low-pressure pipelines and 45 million mu for sprinkler irrigation. Micro-irrigation of 5.8 million mu, and the national irrigation water utilization coefficient reached 0.53.
In the future, drip irrigation may become the main direction for the development of micro-irrigation, and drip irrigation area will increase steadily. The main areas will be concentrated in the northwest, northeast and southwest areas of the field crops. Channel seepage prevention has been widely promoted throughout the country, but efficient water-saving irrigation is mainly distributed in the northern regions. The area of water-saving irrigation in the northern region is 267 million mu, accounting for 65.6% of the total area. Efficient water-saving irrigation area of 192 million mu, accounting for 90% of the country. Micro-irrigation with drip-irrigation is mainly distributed in the northwest region. Most of the pipeline water irrigation is in North China. Sprinkler irrigation is mainly distributed in North China and Northeast China. The area of low-pressure pipeline water transmission projects in North China accounts for 71% of the country, of which Hebei Province accounts for 34% of the country. Sprinkler irrigation is mainly in the northeastern region (including Inner Mongolia), and the area of sprinkler irrigation in the northeast region accounts for 60.4% of the national sprinkler irrigation area, of which Heilongjiang Province accounts for 30.3% of the country. The water resources in the northwestern region are in short supply, ecologically fragile, and micro-irrigation develops rapidly. The area of micro-irrigation projects accounts for 78.8% of the country's micro-irrigation project area, among which, Xinjiang accounts for 75.6% of the country. Micro-irrigation area accounts for 80.9% of field crops, and facilities agriculture and forest fruit area account for 19.1%.
